Be There – Even When You Are Not, with Child ID Code

Friday, August 31st, 2012

childIDcode

Whether we like to admit it or not, most of us have been there. That frightening moment when you turn around and don’t see your child at your side. Most often these moments occur at crowded amusement parks, malls, events or even airports. We can all agree that without a doubt, it’s the worst feeling a parent can have. Just this summer while at the County Fair with friends, we were tempted to write our phone numbers on our kids arms with a Sharpie, just in case we were somehow accidentally separated from them. Effective method? Probably not. But we determined it was better than nothing. Of course, Child ID Code wasn’t available then – but it is now and it’s the perfect safeguard for parents on the move with their littles.
Child ID Code was developed to assist parents and children in reuniting if they are separated in a public place. Child ID Code stickers are basically a coded version of your phone number that can be read by use of smart phone scanning applications. You’ve probably seen these codes at your favorite stores or restaurants – with their codes linking back to the company website. Child ID Code however, links directly to the most important information – your phone number. And even with no cell phone coverage, the numbers can be read.
I had a few questions after being introduced to these fancy stickers. Like, “how fast before they fall off of my kid’s clothes?” and, “how do I scan?” and lastly, “which scanning applications are best?”  I thought I was kind of tech savvy until having this conversation. Anyway, turns out – it’s all pretty simple.
These kid-friendly stickers are made with a durable material that contours to fabric, yet is easy to remove, leaving behind no residue. And while it looks pretty simple, the stickers are surprisingly high-tech -  they are waterproof, UV fade resistant and maintain their shape for a stable scanning surface.
The scanning process, for those not-previously-in-the-know like myself, is just point and click really. If you are separated from  your child, a good samaritan can simply open their scanning app on their phone and scan the code on your child. Ta-da! Your phone numbers pop up .

According to Child ID Code founder (and Luxe Baby contributor) Eric Gasser, “You may have used QR codes before, many of which link to a web page. Our solution does not do this. Instead, our codes allow smart phones to decode and show a parent or caregiver’s phone number(s) immediately and without requiring cell coverage. We made this choice because phones don’t always have good connections and it was important to us that smart phones be able to read the information in our ID stickers the first and every time they are scanned.”  Smart.
There are lots of scanning applications for different types of smart phones. A couple of our favorites are:

  • iOS: Scan.me (Visit App Store on your iOS device)
  • Android: Scan, Inc. (Visit Google Play on your Android device)

And what does this little bit of genius cost? That’s the best part – a sheet of five is just $4.99. And they ship the day you order. So don’t worry – you still have plenty of time to order before you head out on your next vacation, event or anywhere, really.

Want to try them out for yourself? Luxe Baby is giving out 5 free sets! Like Child ID Code on Facebook to win. Winners will be selected September 15th, 2012.

A Culinary Adventure for Mother’s Day

Monday, April 30th, 2012

By Christina Q. Cross

Mother’s Day is just around the corner (May 13, 2012!).   In addition to flowers, candy, and a card, why not give her a culinary experience that she will truly appreciate and enjoy?   Send her on a culinary adventure care of Sur La Table,
offering culinary vacations in Paris or to an in-store cooking class such as “Date Night: Springtime in Paris.”

While there are many travel companies that offer cooking classes, Sur La Table culinary vacations are some of the finest, planning just about everything for you from guided market tours, reservations at renown restaurants, cooking classes with famous chefs and luxury accommodations.   You also don’t have to be (or aspire to be) a Cordon Bleu chef to enjoy their tours – being an aficionado of food and drink is all that is required.

Sur La Table Culinary Vacations

This year will mark Sur La Table’s 40th anniversary Paris culinary tour adventure: “An Insider’s Taste of Paris.”  Highlights include:  a tour of Sur La Table’s legendary cookware store; dinner at La Petite Chaise (the oldest restaurant in Paris); a day with David Lebovitz (former Chez Panisse pastry chef and author who writes the blog “The Sweet Life in Paris”); a private tour of Gérard Mulot’s kitchens (known for macrons, petit fours and seasonal gateaux); lunch with Mort Rosenblum (author of “Olives: The Life and Lore of a Noble Fruit”); and hands-on cooking classes at the historic Ile de la Cité to La Cuisine cooking school.  And this is just a portion of the itinerary!  Similar jammed-packed highlights are offered in the “Tasting New Orleans” and “NYC: A Taste of the Big Apple.”

However, if your supermom is too busy to span the globe for a few days, she is bound to have a few hours to spare for a “mom -only” escape.  Sur La Table offers an array of in-store cooking, grilling and baking classes to choose from including, “Weeknights with Giada,” “Springtime Cake Pops,” or “Date Night: Springtime in Paris” (maybe she’ll even bring dad along to class!)  and well-suited for your next Food Network star or just average foodie mom.   In “Gourmet Pizza on the Grill,” mom will learn to make pizza dough from scratch, grill it perfectly and how to top your pie with unique flavor combinations.  Sur La Table is also offering a new cooking series designed exclusively for Sur La Table by the editors of FOOD & WINE magazine.

Sur la Table stores have full-kitchens, equipped with separate stations, professional cooking tools and equipment for a guaranteed hands-on learning experience.  Lessons are 2 to 2 ½ hours in length. Students not only taste all of the dishes prepared in class, they are given the recipes to make at home.

Sur La Table Cooking Classes

Book a vacation or class for your mom or give her a gift card and let her choose from the class schedule.  And there’s no need to live by a store to purchase.  Shop on-line and Sur La Table will mail a gift card with note directly to your mom.

Sur La Table Gift Cards

No matter the selection, it’s a gift that she is bound to share with you!

Jeni's Ice Cream Sandwich Pack

Besides her most distinctively, imaginative flavors, what’s Jeni Britton’s secret??   For one, she uses cream from local diary farmers who gently pasteurize to her specifications creating the most smoothest ice cream ever. And from Jeni herself,  “We build every recipe from the ground up with luscious, Snowville milk and cream from cows that eat grass. With that exquisite base, we explore pure flavor in whatever direction moves us at any moment, every day, all year.”

Where can you find Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams?  For starters, there are 7 shops throughout Columbus, Ohio and 2 in Nashville, Tennessee.  Or, use Jeni’s retail partner locator to find any of these delicious flavors in stores across the U.S., including Dean & DeLuca.   But the easiest way to get your hands on a freshly-prepared pint is just one click away –  Jeni’s ships door-to-door nationwide!  All orders come double-boxed with dry ice and are frozen upon delivery.  So, there’s never a chance that your package arrives melted.  I scream, you scream: Everybody wants Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams!!! – Christina Q. Pelican Hill – a Little Sunshine and a Little Luxury with your Little.

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

When it’s a gorgeous, sunny Southern California day, nothing beats casual, poolside dining with the entire family (infants and little tots included!!) at Coliseum Pool & Grill at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast.

You don’t have to stay at The Resort at Pelican Hill (which was Condè Nast Traveler, Readers’ Choice Awards 2011, #1 U.S. Resort, October 2011) to enjoy their family-friendly poolside dining.  Rather non-resort guests are welcome to dine there for breakfast, lunch and dinner and provided with complimentary valet parking at the Coliseum Grill’s front entrance.

Throughout the Coliseum Grill, there is a balmy Mediterranean-feel that mimics the resort’s Palladian-inspired architecture from Northern Italy.  Inside, there is spacious table and booth seating.  There is also an impressive, nine-foot plasma TV for those not wanting to miss a sporting event in the bar area.

Coliseum Pool and Grille

Coliseum Pool and Grille, The Resort at Pelican Hill

Hands-down, though, the best view in the house is on the terrace, overlooking the circular pool inspired by Rome’s magnificent namesake in addition to ocean front panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean in the backdrop. It’s highly recommended that you call in advance to reserve a table on the Coliseum Grill’s terrace.

Despite the gorgeous décor and breathtaking views throughout the restaurant, this is one place where the wait staff is extremely accommodating to families with infants and young children.  And there’s something for everyone on the reasonably priced menu, including a variety of salads, burgers in addition to mango-glazed salmon and a portobello mushroom & tofu sandwich.  The kids’ menu caters to both the pickiest of eaters (veggie sticks with dip and ABC Chicken Soup) to the heartiest of eaters (“Endless Pizza, Pasta and Gelato.”)

After a leisurely lunch, we recommend an afternoon of shopping at Crystal Cove Promenade™ which is minutes away from the Resort at Pelican Hill and hosts a unique collection of designer boutiques, well-known retailers including Williams-Sonoma and Banana Republic, fine home furnishings and distinctive dining – all with a stunning ocean view.

Camp Pelican, The Resort at Pelican Hill

Camp Pelican

Additionally, the Resort at Pelican Hill is known for being a family-friendly resort, with Camp Pelican, where kids can enjoy a resort vacation of their own from their parents!  Camp Pelican is made of two age groups.  Kid’s Club is for children ages 4-12 years old and includes daily crafts, meals and exciting activities, and Teen Adventure offers off-site excursions to young adults 13-17, including surf lessons and kayaking excursions in Laguna Beach.

In March and April 2012, The Resort at Pelican Hill is offering a “Spring Break Family Escape,” which includes one night of accommodations and breakfast for four guests at Coliseum Pool & Grill, plus your choice of one full-day poolside cabana rental, or one full-day Camp Pelican visit for one child, or two half-day Camp Pelican visits for two children.  Additionally, enjoy coach service to Crystal Cove Beach and Fashion Island shopping center with our compliments!  Starting from $975* for one night (includes four guests).

Newport Coast averages 340 days of sunshine a year.  It is located between the beach cities of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.  The Resort at Pelican Hill is a 15 minute drive from Orange County’s John Wayne Airport and 45 minute drive from Los Angeles International Airport.  From northern San Diego, you can typically arrive in Newport Coast under an hour depending on traffic. - Christina Q. Photograph the Alphabet

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Eric Gasser

By Eric Gasser

Winter is here and because the days are shorter,  I’m always on the lookout for fun projects to keep my preschooler busy. One activity I recommend is what I call “Photograph the Alphabet.” Kids of all ages will enjoy this one. I started guiding my little guy around the park at the age of 2 snapping away at random things as passersby giggled wondering what my junior photographer was doing.

Things you will need:

  • Kids digital camera
  • Extra batteries
  • Kid’s baseball hat
  • Your own camera
  • Paper and pen

The goal is to select 4-8 letters, then to find them in different everyday things and photograph them. This works great at home, but is particularly good when you’re traveling or exploring somewhere new since it’s both portable and encourages children to explore their environment. An example would be the top of a drinking glass for the shape of a “O” or the side of a slide for the shape of a “J.”

First: select the letters your little one would like to find.  Their name is always a good starting point. Second: write the letters on a piece of paper in upper case. Use this as a checklist and a visual for your child.  Third: while they use their camera to photograph the “letters” they find, use yours to take pictures of them taking pictures!  Tip: If you’re wondering about the kid’s baseball hat, it’s great for helping with glare and light that most kids’ cameras can’t manage very well.

Once you have all these great photos consider creating a little booklet using Shutterfly or SnapFish. The booklets make great gifts and grandparents love seeing their junior photographers at work in locations both near and far from home!
