An Easy Island Getaway – Marco Island Florida

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

By Amy Schwager

It isn’t often that you can take your kids outside to play in the sun and swim with the dolphins, practically in your backyard. That is, of course, unless you are visiting Marco Island. This place is a little piece of paradise – and it is all yours for the taking.

Marco Island is the largest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands, located on the Gulf of Mexico in Southwest Florida. The sun-washed white beaches, casual island lifestyle and  endless sunshine may be what bring you to Marco, but the frolicking dolphins, endless water and sun sports and luxury accommodations will be what bring you back time and again.

Pooltime Play, Marco Island

The island is scattered with large, luxurious homes available for weekly rental.  Not only are they beautiful, but they provide direct access to the gulf – so you and your littles can sit dockside and watch dolphins come up and spray your little toes (who needs Sea World?). And does your little girl or little boy love to fish? Head to the dock and bring your rod – lots of catfish are waiting for them.  Or you and your kids may want to just take it easy and hang poolside all day long, enjoying the sunshine and sunsets – either way its a great time.

Gone Fishin'

And of course it’s a house, not a hotel room. So you have all the comforts of home at your fingertips. Like a gorgeous, giant kitchen to make island snacks, pour your own wine and grill up some fish tacos (so even if you are forced to cook while vacationing, at least you have an amazing view to keep you company). And did I mention the boats and yachts?  Really, what kid doesn’t love to sit and watch water transportation?  The house that we stay in each year is situated directly across from the Marco Island Yacht Club, so we spend hours sitting on the lanai watching the boats come and go and come and go.

For more details on snatching up a luxurious house on the island, see http://rentals.clausenproperties.com

This is our family’s favorite home. This house has it all, and even comes equipped with high chairs, pack n plays, toys for the kids, beach chairs, etc. We had 13 people in this house, with plenty of space and privacy.

When you are ready to leave your private oasis and explore the island, jump in the car for a short drive to the big, white sandy beaches where they have all the water sports you can imagine for your adventurous little ones.  Check out the rentals (windsurfing, jet skies, catamaran) by the Marriott Hotel.

Have fun and tell the dolphins hello for us!

The Suite Life at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

By Nikki Stinson

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas

You wouldn’t think a  trip to a tropical paradise with kids would be paradise, but we were in for a surprise. We arrived at the Ritz-Carlton in beautiful St. Thomas with everything in tow – the kids and all their gear and were greeted with attentive hospitality from the friendly staff.  With our complimentary adult refreshment in-hand, we were whisked away to our Club Level Suite via golf cart. As the bellman unloaded our mound of luggage, we checked out the spacious suite. It was plenty big for the kids and their stuff – toys, stroller, high chairs, and cribs.

We highly recommend the The Ritz-Carlton Club® Level because of the personalized service and attention to detail that are the hallmarks of The Ritz-Carlton. Club Level accommodations include 55 ocean view guest rooms, 15 one-bedroom Executive Suites, three 1,850-square-foot Presidential Suites and the opulent top-floor Ritz-Carlton Suite.

The Great Bay

All of the Club Suites at this resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands have unobstructed ocean views and private balconies. The views are breathtaking!

Another fantastic feature of the Club Level is the Lounge area where food is served all day long. It’s the perfect place to grab a quick breakfast or small lunch with the kids so you don’t have to go to a restaurant for a sit down meal. We all know how challenging meals can be with toddlers and preschoolers! The meals are included with the room so there is no extra expense. Best of all is happy hour – a happy mom makes for a happy family!

Overall, we enjoyed to two sprawling pools everyday, easy access to the beaches of Great Bay and Coconut Cove, and the extensive Aquatic Center where you could do everything from rent snorkeling gear to paddle boats. The kids were constantly entertained! We even took a day trip to St. John on the Lady Lynsey Catamaran, which I highly recommend. The crew was hospitable and knowledgeable and what better way to experience the turquoise waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Lady Lynsey Catamaran

Another plus about traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands is that you don’t need passports for you or the kids. One less thing to worry about while packing up an entire family for vacation! We loved St. Thomas and will definitely go back… even with the kids!

Here area few of our favorite  Ritz-Carlton locations – all perfect for planning trips with your families! Great destinations, wonderful activities and amazing memories. Let’s get packing!!

The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman

Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman

Their kids program won “Best Kids Program” at Travel Mart two years ago, and for very good reason! They  have introduced the Ambassadors of the Environment by Jean-Michel Cousteau eco-adventure program – offering 42 exciting three-hour programs each week! Additionally, they offer complimentary dining for children under five, have numerous water sports toys and show nightly big screen movies under the stars.   It is also one of their newest properties with outstanding facilities – including La Prairie Spa, Nick Bollitieri Tennis Academy, and a wonderful Eric Ripert restaurant.

Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel

Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel

Besides being a lovely beach-side property, we love this Ritz for its great location. It is a great home base to explore some of Southern California’s fabulous kid’s destinations. Disneyland, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo are all within an hour’s drive. If you aren’t too tired after hanging out with Mickey Mouse all day, summertime stays also include poolside movies (June through August). And if you happen to be in a SoCal mood around the holidays, they have a ton of fun events – including a tree lighting, gingerbread displays, teddy bear tea and holiday storytelling. This is a great property for families – and your kids will thank you.

The Ritz Carlton Kapalua on Maui

Ritz-Carlton Kapalua

If you are feeling like hitting the Hawaiian islands with the kids, the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is a perfect choice. Similarly to their Grand Cayman property, Kapalua also offers the Ambassadors of the Environment kids’ curriculum, developed with preservationist Jean-Michel Cousteau, featuring snorkeling expeditions, underwater-photography classes, and workshops on turtles, whales, and ancient Hawaiian navigation techniques. This Ritz is situated on the 23,000-acre Kapalua Resort, a former pineapple plantation, with quick access to rainforest preserves and the reefs of Kapalua Bay’s pure waters.
Everyone in the family will enjoy the Ritz’s whale-watching excursion, Whale Wonders, from December through April. And for the adventurous, North America’s longest zip-line system begins at the Kapalua Adventure Center. Aloha!

A Perfect Stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Boston.

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

by Nikki Stinson

Taking in the view at the Mandarin Oriental - Boston

This winter, we had a fantastic stay at the new Mandarin Oriental in Boston. And any reservations I had about hitting a cold and snowy Massachusetts in December were quickly squashed upon our arrival of this amazingly beautiful hotel. It is a perfect mix of Bostonian sophistication and oriental elegance and is right in the heart of everything – on glorious Boylston Street.

This Mandarin has the most incredible suites! So much room and so beautifully appointed! Upon our arrival, the room was nicely equipped with a crib and child safety packets (including outlet covers, corner covers for tables, band aids and other first aid items). This hotel is one of the best equipped for babies and young children that we have seen. Available amenities include:

- Cribs with baby amenities
- Strollers
- Playpens
- kid’s-sized microfiber robes
- fun bath toys
- Kid’s DVD and video library
- Children’s menu for in-room dining and at our restaurants
- Sony PlayStation 3 consoles with games and Blu-Ray movie library
- Certified babysitting services (with 24-hour notice)

And to make their stay a little more special, the kids received a Mandarin Oriental t-shirt, small backpack with coloring activities and a kid’s brochure of child-friendly activities in the city, including Boston Harbor, the Aquarium and more. It was so handy to have the destination suggestions – as our kids love being out and about!

The hotel itself is connected to the Prudential Center – which has premiere businesses and wonderful shopping (Saks, Gucci and Tiffany to name a few) and tons of restaurants all within walking distance. It was so easy to take the stroller to shop or eat without having to go outside and brave the elements! That was a huge plus for us.

In-Room Dining at the Mandarin!

The dining options, both at the hotel and at the Prudential Center are plentiful.  There are options for everyone – fancy to casual, young to old! And the hotel offers a children’s menu for in-room dining and at their 3 restaurants.

When we weren’t exploring Boston, we spent time in the Mandarin’s beautiful spa. What a wonderful place to unwind while Dad took the kids to play!  You can work out,  take a steam, soak in their vitality tub and then indulge in a facial or massage. Just what the doctor ordered for a busy mom.

All in all, this was an exceptional hotel experience – from the staff to the rooms to the location. More importantly, the Mandarin made traveling with little ones easy and luxurious! We really can’t wait to go again – although next time we might wait until summer!

La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club – A Charming Little Getaway.

Friday, January 28th, 2011

By Amy Schwager

Your kid’s dream vacation, and yours too?  Can it be?

Yes! Really! This magical place does exist and no, it’s not Disneyland.  Meet the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in famous La Jolla, California.  The destination for some sand and surf…on your own private beach.

This hotel has ocean-front studio rooms that are perfect for a family.  The studio comes equipped with king bed (for mommy & daddy), sofa couch that converts into a bed (for the kids), and a kitchen. The accommodations are a bit rustic, but don’t let that scare you.  We are definitely hotel snobs, and while the hacienda- style rooms may not be our first choice,  having access to one of the only private beaches in southern California makes up for it, and then some.  And the never-ending activities (for you and your kids) make for a fun and easy weekend getaway.

Did I mention ocean-front? Every day, plan on enjoying breakfast, lunch, and dinner while you watch the waves crash just steps from you.

Hitting the links at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

This beach club has it all.  Start off your morning playing tennis with the kids on one of the 12 courts.  After a few strokes, your little customer may get bored, so time to move onto the next activity. Golf.  Yes -the club has a 9-hole, par-3 course. This is beyond perfect for your toddler who is working on perfecting his/her swing for the upcoming Mini-PGA tour.  We spent hours playing on this mini course and putting green.

Next up, gated playground.  You can let your kids run around and burn off some of their endless energy racing down the slide and climbing up the rock wall.  A gated playground – genius!

And if your little ones are as sharp as I think they are – they will surely spot the duck pond while testing out the playground. Does anything ever go unnoticed? So they will quickly inform you that is the next item on the itinerary. Head over to the pond to watch the ducks, geese and swans.

By now the kids are hungry, so head back to the club’s restaurant. You can order lunch poolside or take it to go and enjoy a little beach picnic. The beach services team will set you up on the beach with umbrellas, tables, chairs and even a big toy box full of sand toys.

Pool or beach. You pick.  Your kids can run back and forth between the salt water and pool water.  There is a perfect sized baby pool for the kids to splash around in. And if they’d rather the salt water, have them hit the waves with Dad at nearby Scripps Pier or La Jolla Shores.

Charging the waves at La Jolla Shores

But once you hit the beach as sunset draws near, it’s time for mommy and daddy to relax.  Let your little kids play with the toys and you can sit back and drink your beach cocktail. Keep your eyes on the water as there are always seals and dolphins swimming by. These fancy dolphins might just have membership to the beach club, as they are always there! If you have older kids, take a short walk down to La Jolla Shores Village and rent a kayak to take out – you may get lucky and have an up-close encounter with the many seals in the area.

Lounging outside the ocean-front suite.

For dinner, arrange with the beach services to have dinner on the beach. Yes – your own private dinner beach-side. They will bring out a grill, tables, and chairs for a yummy and easy BBQ on the beach.  Your room is steps away, so you can always run in to grab anything out of your refrigerator (mac and cheese for the kids, sippy cups, etc) or beach blankets when it starts to get chilly. Also, there is a little market down the road from the beach club that you can walk to so you can pick up food and drinks for your BBQ.  But the best part of having a room so close to the beach is after dark. Tuck your little ones in for bed and step right back into the sand for evening cocktails with family and friends.  Beach services will set up a fire pit, bring wood and help you enjoy a little alone time on the beach.

And if you choose to venture into the village for dinner, there are several charming restaurants with beautiful ambiance and tasty menus. It can’t really get any better – or at least not when you have kids in tow.

The Ritz-Carlton – Palm Beach, FL

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Our welcome to the hotel was nice – tee shirts and sand dollars with the kid’s names on them. There was also the standard Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo travel pack in the metal crib. Luckily, the Presidential suite offered  plenty of room for cribs so they didn’t have to be in the bedroom. Not much more attention to detail when it came to young kids.

There is lots to do for older children, with two pool areas and easy access to the beach as well as a program called AquaNuts which offers supervised activities for kids 5-12 years old. No “beach entrance” at the pools made it harder with babies/toddlers. For those beach goers beware of old steel pipes protruding out of the concrete (from the old highway that was demolished years ago) especially during high tide. We saw several people injured each day from these.

Lastly, don’t expect to walk to local restaurants or shops. The locale is some miles away from shopping and eateries in Palm Beach.

St. Regis – Manhattan, NY

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Elegant hotel with butler-like service. Rooms are quite small (it is NYC after all) but thankfully the closets were big enough for the crib. The quality of the crib was just ok. It did, however, come with stuffed animal for baby and Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo and body wash travel pack. Large strollers are a pain to get in and out of the hotel because of revolving doors and steps.

W Chicago Lakeshore – Chicago, IL

Monday, October 11th, 2010

We scored ourselves a great suite here, so we were able to set up the crib (that they provided) in the other room. Privacy and sleep for all! Two large bathrooms, living area, lots of fancy stuff. Just a note – the cribs here are metal – less than ideal for us, but matched their décor.

The Little Nell – Aspen, CO

The rooms here are huge – you almost feel like you are in a house! So convenient when tucking the (very nice) crib in the corner at bedtime.
