Traveling can be challenging at times, and while having complete flexibility is preferred, it’s less and less possible these days. I don’t know about you, but when my body finally realizes that I am actually going on vacation, my immune system stops functioning like it should. Or at least it feels that way – as the sniffles or light cough seem to set in the night before the big departure. By the next morning, the whole household is usually congested and cranky. But what can you do? Cancelling is going to cost way too much money, right?
Not necessarily. If you are driving and all you have to worry about is your hotel, here’s a little tip that might help you save on fees if you decide to cancel your reservation after the cancellation window has passed:
- Step 1. Call the hotel reservation line
- Step 2. Change the reservation to a future date (at least 2 days out)
- Step 3. Call the hotel reservation line the following day and cancel the reservation you just made the day before. This keeps you within the cancellation terms and allows you to cancel without penalty.
Remember to request a cancellation number and confirm that no cancellation fee will be imposed. This will work for standard reservations, although a more complex reservation may have restrictions regarding rescheduling. I hope this helps ease the financial burden next time you are considering cancelling your next hotel reservation last minute. - Eric Gasser
